Buenos Aires, Argentina - July 28-30, 2010

Tobacco Forum

Tobacco is the leading cause of morbi-mortality in Argentina and worldwide. Its consumption leads to respiratory and cardiovascular disease, as well as cancer, causing the loss of 800,000 otherwise healthy Argentine lives every year. About 30 per cent of the country’s adult population is smokers and over 40,000 deaths occur every year as a direct consequence of tobacco consumption. This also implies very high financial costs in terms of medical treatment for tobacco-related illness, estimated at 7 billion pesos each year.

Argentina is one of the key South American countries that have not yet ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The LALCA Conference, the sponsoring International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), as well as the hosting Latin American Federation of Cancer Societies (FLASCA) and other local associations would like to support the Coalition for Argentine Ratification of the Framework Convention for Tobacco Control and therefore plan to host a half day pre-conference Tobacco Control Forum on Wednesday, 28 July 2010. We have invited leading and highly experienced international and national experts in the field of tobacco control as well as the Brazilian and Argentinean Minister of Health to participate in the Forum.
